Sanatan Dharmasabha (Harisabha), one of the oldest Hindu religious institute in Shillong,was established in 1896, by some of the enthusiastic Bengalee residents of Shillong, Viz. Late. Kartick Ch. Chatterjee,Dinanath Biswas,Upendralal Kanjilal,Nitai Basu and others to celebrate Ist ever Sarbojonin Durga Puja in Shillong in a makeshift thatched House.The main organizer and Ist Secretary of the Durga Puja Committee was Late Dinanath Biswas, who managed to bring the Idol of Shri Shri Durga from Santipur ( in present West Bengal) by Train,Steamer and finally by Bullock Cart upto Shillong.Since then the core festival viz. Shri Shri Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja,Kali Puja,Jagatdhatri Puja, Dol Utshab, Rathajatra are being regularly celebrated in Dharmasabha (Harisabha).

Sometime in 1898, a temporary structure was constructed at Sanatan Dharmasabha site, with the earnest effort of few noble minded Bengalee residents of Laban.Thus, the annual religious festivals viz. DurgaPuja etc. were being performed there. Apart from this, every Sunday religious congregations meet, occasional Sankirtan and speeches on religious matters were held.

The Present land under occupation of Sanatan Dharmasabha (Harisabha), measuring 3970 sq.ft initially belonged to Late Kartick Ch. Chatterjee. This was subsequently purchased by Raishaheb Prasanna Bhattacharjee, in 1914, who formally donated the same to Sanatan Dharmasabha .

The temporary structure constructed sometime in 1898 in this land,was found to be in a dilapidated condition and accordingly a proposal was passed on 20th January, 1924, with the initiative of Late (Savasree) Nripendra Nath SenGupta, Raisaheb Prasanna Bhattacharjee, Raishaheb Upendra Nath Kanjilal,Hem Ch. Dekaand others for construction of a new building with an estimated amount of Rs. 2500.00. Fund for the same was raised through public donation and some assistance from others. Thus the Dharmasabha building with CGI sheet roofing had its final shape some time in 1930-31. After completion of the new Sanatan Dharmasabha building Durga Puja ,Kali Puja,Rathajatra continued to be celebrated there. Subsequently, Jagaddhatri Puja was also included as the annual festivals of Dharmasabha sometime at the beginning of 1930s.

With the passage of time it was felt necessary by the people of Laban to have a modern RCC structure of Dharmasabha, in place of CGI sheet building. Accordingly a project for construction of present Domed Building was taken up in 1983, with an estimated cost of Rs. 2.00 lacs. With the initiative of Late(Savasree) Bhaskar Choudhury(MLA), Paresh Ch. Dutta,Bipul Roy,Maloy Choudhury,Sunil Roy. Shri Shyamal Biswas,Arunendu Bhowmik and some others, were also associated for the project.The Foundation stone of the Building was laid on 7th November, 1983, by the then Governer of Meghalay, Shri Prakash Mehrotra. The major financial support for the purpose was received from Shri. S.K.Chopra, a renowned contractor of Shillong. For this purpose the public in general of Laban and other parts of Shillong , also extended their financial support. Finally the Domed Sanatan Dharmasabha Building was ceremoniously inaugurated on 2nd October,1992, by Shri Madhukar Dighe, the then Governor of Meghalaya. Finally the interior decoration, flooring etc were completed with the efforts of Late (Sabvasree) Nanda Kr. Bhowmik, Tarapada Das Talukdar, Ramendra Kr. Bhattacharjee,Ramanuj Nag and others.

Till 2000, only the annual celebration of Shri Shri Durga Puja, Kali Puja etc. were being performed at Sanatan Dharmasabha.But with the consecration of Shri Shri Lakshminarayan on 5thMay,2000, followed by consecration of Lord Shiva and Lord Jagannath, the entire scenario of Sanatan Dharmasabha was changed, transforming the Mandop (Where periodical Pujas held) to Lakshmi Narayan Temple.Since then regular Puja is being performed apart from performing annual Durga Puja,Lakshmi Puja,Kalipuja Etc.But even now “Saradotshov” ie Shri Shri Durga Puja is considered the main festival in Sanatan Dharmasabha (Harisabha)

Subsequently, in the adjoining area of Dharmasabha a three storied community Hall cum Guest House and Library, was constructed with the earnest effort of some members of Dharmasabha..The Community Hall was ceremoniously inaugurated in August,2008, This Community Hall caters the needs of the people of the area for social gatherings, musical/dance classes. Pranayam (Yoga) classes.etc.

There are four rooms in the Guest House where accommodation is provided to public as per requirement, with minimum maintenance charges.
